Ghana's Gold Production Surges by 23.4% in 2025
Ghana recorded a significant increase in gold production in 2025, with total output rising by 23.41% to 5.94 million ounces, up from 4.82 million ounces in 2024, according to the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
The impressive growth was largely driven by a strong performance in the small-scale mining sector. Speaking at the presentation of the Chamber's 2025 Annual Report in Accra, outgoing President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Michael Edem Akafia, revealed that small-scale gold production increased by 63.82%, rising from 1.9 million ounces in 2024 to 3.11 million ounces in 2025.
The surge in production enabled the small-scale mining sector to contribute 52.4% of Ghana's total gold output, marking the first time in more than 100 years that small-scale miners have overtaken large-scale mining companies in national gold production.
Mr. Akafia described the development as a major milestone for the country's mining industry and highlighted the growing importance of small-scale miners in supporting Ghana's economy.
Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about the sector's prospects, projecting that gold production could exceed six million ounces in 2026 as investment in the industry continues to increase.
Gold remains one of Ghana's most valuable natural resources and a key contributor to export earnings, government revenue, and economic growth. As one of Africa's leading gold-producing nations, the country's strong performance in 2025 further strengthens its position in the global mining industry.
