The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) closed Friday slightly higher, with the All-Share Index gaining 0.17% to 242,786.42 points.

Market sentiment was mixed but leaned positive. Out of 147 listed stocks, 28 recorded gains, 17 declined and 102 remained unchanged. Trading activity was also healthy, with about 385.49 million shares changing hands during the session.

The performance suggests investors remained interested in the market, although trading was generally cautious.

Omatek Ventures Plc (OMATEK) climbed 9.60% to NGN 1.37, while Africa Prudential Plc (AFRIPRUD) rose 8.84% to NGN 11.70.

Digital payments company eTranzact International Plc (ETRANZACT) advanced 8.79% to NGN 13.00, while AIICO Insurance Plc (AIICO) gained 7.14% to NGN 3.75.

NSL Tech Plc (NSLTECH) dropped 8.82% to NGN 0.62, while Linkage Assurance Plc (LINKASSURE) declined 8.14% to NGN 1.58.

Regency Alliance Insurance Plc (REGALINS) lost 6.67%, while property developer UPDC Plc (UPDC) fell 5.88% to NGN 3.20.

Most Active Stocks

Fidelity Bank followed with 60.75 million shares, while Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) recorded about 24.86 million shares traded at NGN 129.90.

Ellah Lakes also attracted significant activity despite its price decline, with more than 21 million shares traded.

Financial and Tech Stocks Provide Support

Financial services remained one of the strongest areas of the market, with 17 stocks advancing against six decliners.

ICT stocks also performed well, recording three gainers and one loser, reflecting continued investor interest in technology and digital payments companies.

The services sector was weaker, while the real estate market delivered mixed results. UPDCREIT gained strongly even as UPDC Plc declined, showing that investors treated the two property-related stocks differently.

Market Insight

Friday's trading shows a Nigerian stock market that remains cautiously positive rather than strongly bullish.

The 0.17% gain in the NGX All-Share Index may appear small, but the number of advancing stocks and strong trading volume suggest investors are still actively positioning in selected sectors.

Financial services and technology stocks remain important areas to watch, while some insurance, services and smaller-cap stocks continue to experience sharp price swings.

For beginner investors, the session is also a reminder not to chase stocks simply because they appear among the day's biggest gainers. A stock rising 10% in one session does not automatically mean it is a good long-term investment.

Understanding the company's earnings, financial position, valuation, dividend history and long-term prospects remains more important than reacting to one day's price movement.

As trading resumes next week, investors will be watching whether financial and technology stocks can maintain their momentum and whether selling pressure in insurance and other weaker sectors begins to ease.
