💰 THE COMPLETE GUIDE: How to Buy & Sell Bonds in Ghana
Most investors understand shares. Few understand bonds — and that gap costs them diversification and income.
What is a bond?
A loan. You lend money to government or a company, they pay interest (coupon), and return your principal at maturity. Fixed schedule = "fixed income."
Two issuer types:
🏛️ Government bonds — lower risk, state-backed
🏢 Corporate bonds — higher risk, higher yields
Where bonds trade:
The Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) — built by Bank of Ghana, GSE, CSD, and licensed dealers. Ghana's premier fixed income market.
What most don't realize:
You can't access GFIM directly. Every trade runs through a licensed bank or broker:
1️⃣ Open a depository account
2️⃣ Select a bond, with broker guidance
3️⃣ Broker executes at best price
4️⃣ You get a Contract Note — price, quantity, fees
5️⃣ Your CSD account is updated
Two numbers to know:
💰 Face value — fixed, paid at maturity
📈 Capital value — fluctuates if traded early
Hold to maturity = predictable. Trade early = more volatility.
Why bonds belong in your portfolio:
✅ Regular coupon income
✅ Reduced volatility if held to term
✅ Diversification — often rise when equities fall
GFIM's network includes dealers like GCB, Ecobank, Stanbic, plus brokers like Databank, IC Securities, and EDC Stockbrokers.
